Inflammatory Diseases in Patients with Darker Skin

by Ncoza Dlova

Inflammatory skin diseases present unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in patients with darker skin tones, requiring a specialized understanding of how melanin-rich skin responds to inflammation. A strong foundation in basic dermatology, immunology, and the specific pathophysiological mechanisms that affect skin of color is essential for properly identifying and managing these conditions. This knowledge helps bridge the historical gap in dermatological education, which has traditionally focused on presentations in lighter skin tones.

This understanding is crucial for providing equitable and effective healthcare across diverse patient populations. From common conditions like acne and eczema to more complex disorders such as psoriasis and lichen planus, recognizing how these diseases manifest differently in darker skin enables healthcare providers to make accurate diagnoses and implement appropriate treatment strategies. This knowledge directly impacts clinical practice by reducing diagnostic errors, improving treatment outcomes, and enhancing the quality of care for patients with darker skin tones.
