Ascites

Ascites is the pathologic accumulation of fluid within the peritoneal cavity Peritoneal Cavity The space enclosed by the peritoneum. It is divided into two portions, the greater sac and the lesser sac or omental bursa, which lies behind the stomach. The two sacs are connected by the foramen of winslow, or epiploic foramen. There are a number of etiologies, including cirrhosis, right-sided congestive heart failure, schistosomiasis, portal vein thrombosis, hepatitis, and Budd-Chiari syndrome. Etiology

Analysis of the ascitic fluid

The next step requires analysis of the ascitic fluid.

  • Appearance and color:

    • Turbid → possible infection
  • Cell count and differential:
    • < 250 polymorphonuclear leukocytes Leukocytes White blood cells. These include granular leukocytes (basophils; eosinophils; and neutrophils) as well as non-granular leukocytes (lymphocytes and monocytes). Obesity: abnormal and excess fat deposition, which presents a risk to the patient’s health. Locations of fat accumulation can vary from person to person. Abdominal obesity Abdominal obesity A condition of having excess fat in the abdomen. Abdominal obesity is typically defined as waist circumferences of 40 inches or more in men and 35 inches or more in women. Abdominal obesity raises the risk of developing disorders, such as diabetes; hypertension; and metabolic syndrome. Although first reported from africa, kwashiorkor is now known throughout the world, but mainly in the tropics and subtropics. It is considered to be related to marasmus. Malnutrition in children in resource-limited countries: a type of severe acute malnutrition Malnutrition Malnutrition is a clinical state caused by an imbalance or deficiency of calories and/or micronutrients and macronutrients. The 2 main manifestations of acute severe malnutrition are marasmus (total caloric insufficiency) and kwashiorkor (protein malnutrition with characteristic edema). Malnutrition in children in resource-limited countries most commonly seen in children of resource-limited countries (though it can also occur in older adults).
