Local and foreign entrepreneurs and experts from various branches celebrated the fifth annual “lab of tomorrow” meeting with the focus on finding a solution to a specific development problem. The German e-learning provider Lecturio participated in the 3-day workshop contributing its expertise in medical education. Together with about 50 other companies and organizations (including SAP and the WHO), Lecturio helped explore ideas to improve chronic disease prevention in Kenya. The project has since progressed to a test phase planning together with a local partner firm.

Kenya is experiencing an epidemiological transition from infections to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). NCDs are a major public health concern with significant social and economic implications in terms of health care needs, productivity loss and premature death.

The “Lab of Tomorrow” is sponsored by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. It allows entrepreneurs to generate new promising business cases tackling this new challenge and provides them with the relevant network to ultimately implement their ideas.

Lecturio and other group members have worked on ideas to prevent noncommunicable diseases through risk assessment, screening and education in the workplace. The approach is followed by digital behavior change support including educational videos. Lecturio was happy to contribute its know-how in e-learning for knowledge dissemination, especially in the field of medical education. Currently, Lecturio provides more than 3.000 high-quality online video lectures given by handpicked, award-winning medical instructors from the world’s most renowned medical faculties such as Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins and Brown University. This digital content can be used for medical capacity building purposes in Kenya.

Stefan Wisbauer, Managing Director, says: “It was important to understand the cultural
characteristics. If a married couple is losing weight after getting married, the whole relationship is questioned. Eating fast food or having a car is a privilege—you only walk if you do not have the money. There is a clear need for education concerning food and exercise to break through those myths.”

Lecturio believes the lab of tomorrow to be a great opportunity that will not only benefit companies, but make a positive difference in the world as well. The goals of Lecturio include making high quality education available for projects and institutions that will improve health care and health systems all over the world.

Recently, Lecturio launched the Medical Education Development Initiative (MEDI), which aims to support medical capability building by addressing the shortfall of experienced medical instructors in developing and emerging countries. Afghan medical universities in Kabul and Balkh are the first beneficiaries of MEDI. Recently they began a major pilot project to integrate Lecturio’s online courses into their curricula.
