Women in Medical Education: Leading Progress Amid Challenges
According to recent data collected by AAMC, the presence of women has grown as learners, teachers, and leaders, but disparity remains among the highest ranks.
In the 2023-24 academic year, women accounted for:
- 45% of full-time faculty
- 29% of full-time professors
Women made up the majority (52%) of faculty with PhDs in clinical science. However, they remained underrepresented among faculty with MDs and MD-PhDs in both clinical and basic sciences.
In addition, more women are now in leadership positions in medical schools compared to values from past years. Here’s an overview of the data presented by AAMC in 2023:
